Why Antioxidants Deserve a Seat at your Table

Why Antioxidants Deserve a Seat at your Table

The importance of antioxidants, and the best ones to have in your skincare.

When it comes to antioxidants in your skincare, here at James Vivian we’re of the belief - the more the merrier. We love these molecules so much because they are effective at fighting the visible signs of ageing, ensuring your skin health is kept in check by protecting from free radicals and they work to prevent oxidative damage to the cells. Not only are these industrious little things great at protecting our skin, but they also nourish and revitalise the complexion too, (swoooooon).

For reference, free radicals might sound like a really good punk band but they’re actually not so fun. Examples of free radicals are air pollution, sunlight, smoking, alcohol pesticides and poor nutrition, and they all contribute to the damage of our cells that can lead to accelerated ageing of the skin. Antioxidants work to counteract and protect from free radicals, and that is why they are so important and so fabulous.

Just like anything within our wonderful world of cosmeceuticals, we’re absolutely spoilt for choice when it comes to offerings of products harnessing the power of antioxidants. In a world of abundance, it’s important to know which form of antioxidant is best for you and your skin. Below we break down a handful of our fave antioxidants and some products that put them to good use…

Vitamin E
You will find Vitamin E in a tonne of skincare products as it works to defend the skin from external aggressors whilst being very soothing. Just like another of our besties, Hyaluronic Acid, Vitamin E is a humectant which means it promotes hydration and moisture retention. A hardworking protector and hydrator makes Vitamin E suitable for all skin types!

You can often find it in many sunscreen formulas, like Aspect’s Sun Envirostat.

Vitamin C
Vitamin C is an antioxidant powerhouse that wears many different hats. It helps protect from free radicals which contribute to the development of fine lines and wrinkles.

Whilst antioxidants are typically applied in the morning to help negate daytime environmental damage, Vitamin C when applied at night, can help lighten the appearance of pigmentation and can help even out your skin tone.

One of our favourite ways to incorporate concentrated amounts of Vitamin C into the routines of our clients is via Dermaquest’s C3 Serum. Whilst Vitamin C is great for many skin’s, every skin is different and when looking to incorporate vitamin C into your routine it is important to find a formula that suits you. The best way to do this is by letting us help you! Get in touch here.

Resveratrol
This is a potent polyphenolic antioxidant that is found in red grapes, fruits such as blueberries and cranberries as well as red wine. It’s been proven to brighten a dull complexion whilst simultaneously protecting against environmental aggressors and even has skin calming properties, meaning it’s great for redness.

This antioxidant will suit all skin types and is found in one of our favourite eye products, Dermaquest's Stem Cell 3D Eye Lift.

Retinol
Retinol needs no introduction. This is a Vitamin A derivative that is a must in a routine if you have any age management concerns and are looking to fight early signs of ageing. Although not widely known, retinol does in fact belong to the antioxidant family! Whilst antioxidants are typically prescribed for your AM routine to protect, we recommend using retinoids in the PM as they make your skin extra sensitised to the sun.

We have a generous offering of retinoid products ready for your perusal here. But again, please be mindful of adding this ingredient into your routine before consulting your Dermal Clinician. Always best to ask and get it right the first time!

Vitamin B3 (Niacinamide)
This antioxidant does it all. Not only does it reduce fine lines and protect the skin from environmental damage, but it can also help regulate excess sebum production and in turn help with pore size as well as acne/congestion too. This is a great ingredient for all skin types whether you’re dry, congested, irritated or oily!

Our go-to serum harnessing the superpowers of Vitamin B3 is the celebrated Multi-B Plus Serum by Aspect. It is protective, hydrating and has a wonderful citrusy smell that is a joy to apply in the morning and night. We’re yet to meet a skin that doesn’t like it!

As always, we’re here to chat antioxidants, products and grunge band recommendations with you!
